On July 20, 2006, Matthew Frank, Wisconsin’s Secretary of the Department of Corrections (DOC), spoke at the monthly meeting of the Prison Aftercare Network (PAN). Mr. Frank brought several key DOC staff members to hear and meet members of PAN who were in attendance at the meeting.
Secretary Frank reminded us that prisoner re-entry is the current focus of the Department of Corrections, and that he is very interested in working with PAN assisting more prisoners in successfully returning to our communities.
Warden John Husz, of the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility, was also present, and is currently heading up a re-entry committee to address ways in which the DOC and communities might be able to work together on re-entry issues. Mr. Frank also promised to help resolve the concerns of volunteers that would not conflict with the security issues of the institutions.
Christine Tanner, Director of Social Services at Oakhill Correctional Institution, was present as well. She is heading up a mentoring volunteer (this is unclear whether it is a volunteer committee on mentoring, or a committee of volunteers on mentoring) committee for the DOC that will address issues related to mentoring and how the fraternization policy can up updated. Mr. Frank invited PAN leadership to meet with that committee to bring about the needed changes as soon as possible.
