The 2010 CAPA Prisoner Reentry Conference was held October 7-10, 2010, in Milwaukee, WI. The conference was held in collaboration with the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative (MFI). After CAPA had scheduled the date for our conference we learned that MFI annually hosts their conference on the same weekend each year. The target audience for the MFI conference is fathers who are experiencing difficulty carrying out their role as fathers. It turns out that many of the fathers who attend the MFI conference are returning citizens. The leaders of CAPA and MFI agreed that since the conferences were scheduled for the same dates that the two organizations should collaborate with each other. MFI hosted a special meeting on the afternoon of October 7th specifically for returning citizens. Forty-five individuals attended this event.
2010 conference speakers included Dr. Wilson Goode, Chairman of the Philadelphia Leadership Foundation, Katerina Spinaris-Tudor, President of Correctional Oasis in Florence, CO, Bishop R.M. Burt, Sr. Pastor to Greater New Birth Church, and Lyndon Azcuna, Director of Awana Lifeline, in Chicago, IL.
Twenty-nine workshops were conducted at the conference. Some of the workshop topics included: Healing Communities, Understanding & Treating Sexual Addictions, Moving the Reentry Business Plan from Words to Actions, Windows to Work: A Collaborative Project, Walking in My Shoes: A Model of Community Outreach, Leadership Development, Evidence Based Practices, Anger Management and Counseling, Addressing Addiction & Relapse Prevention, Secrets to Program Sustainability, Case Management that Produces Real Change, Impacting and Understanding the Legislative Process, Building and Sustaining A Mentor Reentry, Program Strategies for Children Impacted by Incarceration, Jobs for Life, Understanding the Other Side of Corrections, Healing Those Who Help Heal Others, Family Enhancement Skills that Reduce Recidivism, Females: Understanding their Hearts & Addressing their Needs, Life Skills Training, The Impact of Probation and Parole on Reentry, Answers for At-Risk Youth, Innovative Job Creation and Development, and Restoring Sex Offenders in the Community.
Approximately 500 people from 30 states attended the conference. Notably, four Native Americans attended this conference. We learned that there is a significant Native American population in Wisconsin. Native American leaders expressed a desire to learn more about how to develop reentry programs for those returning to their community from prison. Also, two people attended the conference from Ghana, West Africa. They also expressed a strong desire to help establish a reentry initiative in their own country.
The site has not yet been selected for the 2011 conference. CAPA leaders are currently engaged in conversations with local leaders who are interested in hosting the conference in their city. An announcement will be made in January regarding the place and date of the conference. By the way, this will be CAPA's tenth annual conference. My, how time has flown since our first conference in Detroit in 2002! You won't want to miss this conference as it will certainly be the most special yet. We are calling all of those who have attended passed conferences to make a special effort to attend. We are confident that the Lord will meet us on our 10th year in a special and unique way.
